Mutation Monday
Other beiges
There are other mutation colors that are classified as beige. The Wellman Beige looks almost identical to the Tower Beige but is said to have darker eyes. To my knowledge, this variation is not currently worked with in the United States and may be forever lost.
The Sullivan Recessive Beige is a simple recessive (meaning both parents must carry the gene-one of the important uses of pedigrees). There was one breeder working with this mute in the USA but there are not records what happened to the animals after he retired. However, it is believed that the offspring was sold as pets and now is lost.
Goldbarr’s or Lowe Recessive Whites, are the final known form of recessive beige. They were first discovered at Baar ranch in the 1980s and identically on the East Coast around the same time. For many years, because the herds they were discovered in had no contact with each other, it was thought they were two separate variants. This was proven inaccurate by Mish Irish and Paul K. when they bred multiple Lowe Recessive Whites to Goldbarrs and ended up with kits of the same color (not standard grey). This gene is considered a simple recessive and is the only known beige variation that does not get freckles. They are off white color and/or have a golden/yellow hue, with red eyes that can also range from light to dark. There are currently less than a dozen breeders working with this mutation in the USA, that I am aware of. Goldbars have recently been added as a showable color. They are still very much a work in progress and are known to have weak fur and or be small.
