Mutation Monday
Blue diamond is a recessive mutation, expressing 2 or 3 recessive colors in the same animal. Blue diamond is when violet and sapphire are expressed at the same time. The term triple diamond is sometimes used when afro violet, german violet and Larson sapphire are all present in the same animal.
The earliest information on this mute that I could find was from 2006, but records of viophires (another older term for blue diamond) have been seen before then. An exact date of discovery is unknown.
A blue diamond should be a very clear blue coloring with a bright white belly. Breeding to standards is a must when improving all of these recessives. Because of its complexity, not many breeders actively work with this mutation. This coloring is a perfect example of where tracking pedigrees is such a useful tool.
